Dragon Ball Super Broly review: successful film!

STREAMING DBS BROLY: DON’T GIVE IN TO TEMPTATION

Don't look for Dragon Ball Super Broly streaming, the cinema release date of which is scheduled for March 13 in France ... that would be a waste 🙅‍♂️! Yes, the new trailer is very appealing, but Kame Sennin promises you: be patient until the cinema screening, it's definitely worth the detour (not to mention the atmosphere). If you have already had the chance to see Dragon Ball Super: Broly on January 24 during its preview (like our team 😎) you will agree that this new feature film, the 20th produced by the Dragon Ball franchise, is a great success. Even a great success!

And for good reason: to the greatest pleasure of fans and for newbies who will discover the DBS universe , Akira Toriyama himself (the creator of the manga and the anime Dragon Ball) is directly involved in the scenario, the plot and character design (notably that of the legendary Broly), completely rewritten for the occasion. What more ?

We thus discover the origin of the Legendary Super Saiyan as well as that of the Super Warriors Son Goku and the Prince of Saiyans : Vegeta. It's Tatsuya Nagamine (director of One Piece) who features the most powerful and popular villain of the OVA as well as a host of old and new characters. Using the Seven Crystal Balls, teleport yourself to the Super Saiyan planet: already a stunning box office across the Channel, a careful story, a revisited central character, dazzling and never-before-seen fights, delirious humor and fan service dream. According to some reviews, a film which marks the starting point of a new area in the history of Dragon Ball !

DBZ BROLY: A BOX OFFICE WITH YELLOW HAIR

Before explaining the success of the first film in the Dragon Ball Super series and discussing the Super Saiyans Broly, Vegeta and Goku, here are some Kamehamehas from elsewhere since the film is already achieving record revenues:

- In its cradle in Japan, released in December 2018, Dragon Ball Super: Broly reached the top of the box office in its first weekend. Note thatToei Animation initially aimed for a revenue of 44 million dollars... but has already amassed 87 million dollars worldwide 💰!

- In the USA, it is already the 3rd best animated film of all time in terms of number of entries and the first of 20 Dragon Ball productions. It beat out Pokémon for the title of "best first day start" for a Japanese animated film. Translation: it's the film of all records 🏆!

- In France, the previews on January 23 and 24, 2019 were sold out and the atmosphere was totally crazy! Courage until March 13 ...

- The release of a Blu-ray box set is already planned in the USA and Canada for April 2019. In Spain and the United Kingdom, the release of the Blu-ray pack is planned for May 2019.

THE STORY OF THE MOVIE SUMMARY (UNSPOILED)

The film presents two relatively distinct parts: first a very interesting “ origin story ” of Broly, his relationship with his father Paragus but also the origins of Vegeta and Goku on their home planet (Planet Vegeta). Then the monstrous fight of the Super Saiyans!

1. So the DBS Film begins by explaining how baby Broly, placed in the same incubation room as Vegeta, was sent (by order of King Vegeta) to the (very inhospitable) planet Vampa . Indeed, the powers of the young Saiyan being abnormally high, he threatened the supremacy of the prodigal son (Vegeta Jr). The infant is quickly followed by his father: they both try to survive alone and independently, away from the whole story of Dragon Ball . Found by two Frieza soldiers 40 years later, they are recruited by the tyrant to satisfy his thirst for revenge. It’s going to be tough 😤!

2. For this, they go to Earth to do battle with the two Super Warriors Goku and Vegeta, busy looking for the seventh missing crystal ball in Antarctica (to make Bulma 5 years younger -lol- 😂). The stranger releases a very high level of energy when he leaves the ship. A mysterious and unknown super warrior who seems out of control. Ready for a fight between Saiyans that will go down in history?

BROLY, THE LEGENDARY SUPER SAIYAN

Impressive in 1993 in Dragon Ball Z: Broly theLegendary Super Saiyan (initially created by Shigeyasu Yamauchi), he appears in two other OAVs: Dangerous Rivals ( Dragon Ball Z: Broly Returns ) and Super Warrior Attack ( Dragon Ball Z: Bio Broly ). Everyone complains about Dragon Ball GT, but the real diarrhea of ​​our favorite manga is this:

Terrifying, almost demonized, its history, its origin or even its character had never before been described. This is done with this “back-story” episode which humanizes our terrible assailant : an indisputable element of the success of this film. Presented as an anomaly with “infinite potential” (as mentioned by King Vegeta himself), Broly is in reality just a child who has been manipulated by an ill-intentioned father. We'll let you discover the rest!

A SUPER DRAGON BALL IN A NEW AREA

The animation will re-enchant Dragon Ball Super fans. The character design is very careful in the film. Visually, the graphic palette is very colorful, the fineness of the lines is exceptional without harming the traditional cartoon appreciated by fans.

The decorations are neat, the designs are aesthetic and pleasant to look at. The dynamism of the scenes and shots is very successful. We enter a new area with effects of shock waves, collapse or explosion, plays of light and variations of colors and textures to impress the retina 🤩!

CRAZY INTENSITY SAIYAN FIGHTS

Modern 3D techniques and unique camera shots produce stunning gestures and dynamics . The camera movements create ultra-impressive aerial choreographies, as if the characters were wearing a Go-pro! Obviously all of this is absolutely worth seeing at the cinema 🎥! We will particularly notice a mind-blowing tracking shot when Broly falls and passes through four successive mountains after being hit by Vegeta.

The “sound design” highlights the blows and shocks in an intense way accompanying everything in a long fight that is 200% gripping! The musical atmosphere is varied and adapted with old musical themes and modernized remixes.

Finally, the transformations of the three Super Warriors are a cocktail of beauty and details: iridescence, gradients, texture and energy effects, electromagnetic glows, auras and very successful shock waves. A “dragonballesque” Northern Lights!

DBZ HUMOR AT THE MEETING

We will still appreciate in this film Goku's carefreeness and his clumsiness, just like Vegeta's poorly polished and always in control bear side 😅, but who both manage to share the pleasure of combat against a (large) opponent. ! We also have fun with offbeat gags , camera shots and Japanese-style animation of certain characters (notably Cheelai - new character -, a woman who accompanies Broly on his adventures).

We giggle when discovering the completely crazy intentions of Bulma ( to become 5 years younger ) and Frieza ( to grow 5 cm ) for their wish to the Sacred Dragon Shenron. Why only 5 years? Why only 5cm? So that it seems “natural” according to their words!

INCREDIBLE FAN SERVICE IN DBZ BROLY (SEEN IN THE TRAILERS)

We see in the different trailers some characters who evoke the other OAVs: we see, among others, Beerus and Whis (Battle of God). The film is overflowing with easter eggs 🥚and allusions to the DB universe for fans and geeks who will have fun picking them all up! Without spoiling the film for you, we can mention the appearance of Raditz as a child, Bulma, Piccolo, Goku as a baby who is shown furtively in a capsule with Saiyan armor.

We also see his father Bardock (or Baddack), whom we know from the eponymous OAV (1990) and we see at his side a young woman... Goku's mother no doubt. Let's also mention Broly'sOozaru (Giant Monkey), a transformation that all Saiyans encounter when they stare at a moon for too long.

DBS BROLY SPOIL: SOME LITTLE REVELATIONS

Don't worry, the ending will not be revealed here but here are a few suggestions to help you wait a little longer!

- The relationship between Broly and his father Paragus (shown in the first part of the film) is based on violent parental control using an electromagnetic discharge collar ⚡(not very nice...). Paragus stops his son by force to control his excessive fury.

- A humanized savagery nevertheless when we learn that a giant worm from the planet Vampa, Baa , is the young warrior's only friend . Broly was very unhappy after his father ended this relationship with his only comrade (Paragus attacked Baa with a gun and cut off his ear). Afterwards, the giant worm Baa was never the same again.

Broly will also wear a piece of his skin to keep a memory of his old friend ( green fabric around the Saiyan's waist throughout the film). Emotions and feelings for a warrior controlled by his rage and forced to fight by his father.

- Cheelai and Lemo , the two members of Frieza's army who patrol Vampa, will be the first people Broly meets after Paragus.

- Shenron is only capable of granting one wish. Too bad for Frieza who would have liked to grow 5 cm and for Bulma who wanted to be 5 years younger!

- We learn through reverse engineering that it was Frieza himself and his father Cold who brought the Scouters ' technology to the Saiyans. It is a mixture of Power detector and radar scope which measures the energy scale. For fear of the myth of the Legendary Super Warrior, the tyrant of the Universe took control of the Saiyan people and ultimately completely annihilated them. Even Baddack's comrades are on their knees before him 😨.

IN SHORT: A GREAT SUCCESS FROM TOEI ANIMATION!

We can finally admire the combat technique of the experienced Super Warriors who must use a succession of transformations up to the stage of Gogeta Super Saiyan Blue in order not to give in in their titanic fight against the invicible Broly. It is clear that the mysterious fighter progresses instantly during the battle, with each transformation of Goku and Vegeta. Infinite potential? Legendary Super Saiyan? It's up to you 🤔!

The film Dragon Ball Super: Broly is therefore intense in terms of its DB mythology, the aura of the characters, very stylish appearances, its aesthetic design and its supercharged animation.
