Like his fellow Commandos, he loves combat poses and is the soldier Frieza trusts the most. Ginyu is well known for his famous body swap technique.
Captain Ginyu is one of the most important secondary antagonists in the Frieza saga and has a very important role. He will return much later in the series during the Golden Frieza saga.

GINYU APPEARANCE
In his most famous form shown during the Frieza Saga, Captain Ginyu is a large humanoid with purple skin. He has large veins visible on the top of his head which vaguely resembles a human brain. It also has two black horns on the sides of its skull. He is equipped with a black jumpsuit and combat armor with side shields. He obviously has the Special Forces insignia on one of the plates of his armor. Like all members of Frieza's army, Ginyu has a green power detector . 👍
GINYU’S PERSONALITY
Like his fellow Commandos, Ginyu displays arrogance and is ruthless during fights. He is, however, an honorable fighter and demonstrates a great sense of honor by having a strong preference for fair fights . Ginyu demonstrates this aspect when he threatens Jeice to kill him when the latter interferes in the fight against Son Goku . The Earth Saiyan takes note of this behavior and even thinks that Ginyu is not completely evil compared to the rest of Frieza's Forces. 👊
The captain cares a lot about his teammates and becomes furious when he learns from Jeice of the deaths of Guldo, Recoome and Barta. He is also very severe when one of them fails a mission. This is perfectly demonstrated when Ginyu gives Jeice a shock when he learns that the latter fled the battlefield , abandoning his companions. 😅
Of all of Frieza's army, Ginyu is undoubtedly the most loyal and is the one who reveres the Galactic Emperor the most. It is this deep respect he has for him that explains the fact that he never attempted to swap bodies with Frieza . Even after being transformed into a frog on the planet Namek, he remains loyal to Frieza, convinced that he will one day be able to return to service.
Unlike his peers, Ginyu is a very calculating and methodical character who favors a thoughtful and pragmatic approach in a fight. He has a habit of always researching his mission before starting to act. Ginyu has a perfect understanding of ki and combat. This is why the captain is the only one to understand that Goku has the ability to hide his true power . He can thus, just like him, mask his true potential. 💪
GINYU BEFORE AND DURING THE FREEZER SAGA
Like other members of the Special Forces, Captain Ginyu's special powers were born during his childhood and he was able to develop them later. However, it is unknown what the captain's original body was . Cooler would be one of the few people to know Ginyu's true identity. The elite warrior had indeed joined an elite Cooler squadron before later joining Frieza's army. 😎
During the Namek saga in Dragon Ball Z, the Ginyu Commando was summoned on Frieza's orders when the latter learned that Vegeta was also looking for the Dragon Balls on his side. The Saiyan's level continued to increase until it surpassed the power of Doria and Zarbon , prompting the Galactic Emperor to contact Special Forces.
Once on the planet Namek, the elite soldiers are ordered to capture Vegeta and bring back the Dragon Balls while killing any possible intruders. The Ginyu Commando quickly locates the crystal balls and quickly demonstrates his power: Barta uses his supernatural speed while Guldo freezes time with his powers and thus manages to steal the precious artifacts. 🤛
Ginyu is delighted to be able to face Vegeta one-on-one but his subordinates complain about never having the opportunity to fight. The captain thus decides to bring the Dragon Balls back to Frieza while leaving his men to take care of the prince of the Saiyans. Ginyu uses his telekinetic powers to levitate the artifacts and thus manages to bring them back to his master safely. 👍
Frieza and Ginyu then try to summon the Holy Dragon but the Dragon Balls refuse to activate. The Galactic Emperor then remembers a dying Namekian who told him that it would be impossible to summon the dragon even after gathering all seven artifacts . Frieza therefore understands that there must be a secret formula in Namekian language in order to validate the ritual. He then uses his improved power detector in an attempt to locate Namek survivors. The area left intact by Frieza's forces where Nail, Dende and Guru are located is thus discovered. 🌎
Captain Ginyu immediately volunteers to go and make the Nameks talk but Frieza prefers to take on this task himself. The purple mutant is thus responsible for monitoring the Dragon Balls.
During his surveillance mission, he is joined by Jeice who is in a panicked state. The latter tells him of the arrival of a powerful warrior on Namek and that the other members of the Special Forces have been killed. Jeice is violently reprimanded for fleeing the fighting. 👊
Ginyu, not wishing to tarnish his reputation , decides to hide the news from Frieza and decides to take care of Goku himself. He leaves the Dragon Balls under the surveillance of Frieza 's soldiers and leaves to confront the Saiyan with Jeice.
Ginyu then notes Goku's low power (around 5000) but understands that the Saiyan is capable, just like him, of masking his true potential. The elite warrior then estimates the power of his opponent at around 60,000 units. 😮
Despite the provisional alliance of the two Saiyans, Vegeta flees, abandoning Goku and the fight begins. Ginyu and Son Goku face off savagely one on one . The purple mutant is impressed by his opponent's power and begins to wonder if Goku could be the famous Super Saiyan of legend. He finally rejects this hypothesis and the fight resumes with a vengeance. The two warriors fight on equal terms and Ginyu ends up grabbing his opponent using a grip. His action was only possible thanks to the intervention of Jeice who had decided to distract Goku. Desiring a fair fight, Ginyu then violently reprimands his subordinate and decides to free the Saiyan from his grip . He also threatens to kill him if he ever does it again. 💀
Captain Ginyu begins to understand that his opponent is not using all his power and asks him to reveal all his power . Son Goku then charges all his energy and displays a power of 180,000 which terrifies the two elite warriors. Ginyu's power being 120,000 at its maximum, he understands that he is not up to the task and decides to use his famous body swap technique . Ginyu self-mutilates by piercing his armor and manages to switch bodies with Son Goku. The Saiyan is now bleeding out and Ginyu realizes that it is impossible for him to draw the full potential of his new body. In fact, he fails to rise above 23,000, which makes him weaker than Jeice. 🤏
Captain Ginyu then faces Gohan and Krillin while Jeice faces Vegeta . The purple mutant begins to get used to Goku's body as the fight goes on and begins to gain the advantage. Krillin and Gohan are eventually joined by Goku (in Ginyu's body) but all three are defeated . For his part, Vegeta killed Jeice and is now the strongest fighter around. Ginyu tries to steal his body but Goku intervenes and regains his original appearance. The captain performs his technique again but Goku interrupts the attack by sending a Namekian Frog in front of Vegeta. Ginyu's soul is thus trapped in the amphibian's body. 👊
In the anime, Vegeta decides to spare the frog, believing it to be a good punishment. 😕
The character Ginyu is never seen again in the manga. However, in the anime, he makes frequent appearances in his frog form.
Ginyu quickly located Gohan who was busy monitoring the Dragon Balls. He tries to steal them by rolling them but in vain. Son Gohan eventually realizes that it is Ginyu and chases him away, making fun of him.
Later, he is chased by a pink female frog who tried to seduce him. Ginyu eventually escapes from him and later witnesses the summoning of the dragon Porunga using the Dragon Balls. 🐲
Some time later, he is discovered by Bulma who will keep him as a companion. She soon understands that the frog is capable of understanding human language and thus makes a device to be able to understand croaking and thus communicate. With his new ability, Ginyu uses his Body Change technique once again and takes over Bulma's body. The Commando captain then joins the scene of the clash between Goku and Frieza, followed by Bulma in her Frog form. Ginyu finds Piccolo, Gohan and Krillin there and tries to pass himself off as Bulma. However, he is quickly unmasked when he starts cheering for Frieza.
Once his cover is destroyed, he begins to attack the three warriors and tries to seize the most powerful body, that of Piccolo . Bulma arrives on the scene in her frog form and Gohan manages to identify her immediately. The young Earthling then grabs the amphibian and throws it onto the body change technique , thus returning his body to Bulma while Ginyu returns to the frog's body. 🐸
At the end of the saga, following the wish made to Porunga , all living beings from Namek are then teleported to Earth with the exception of Goku and Frieza. Ginyu will live the rest of these days in the gardens of Capsule Corporation , in the greenhouse of Bulma's house.
Ginyu will only finally find his death in the saga of Majin Buu when the latter destroys planet Earth.
GINYU IN THE FILM THE RESURRECTION OF F
We will have to wait for the film “ The Resurrection of F ” to see Ginyu appear again in the series. At the start of Frieza's revenge, he infiltrates Jaco 's ship still in his frog form until arriving on Earth. A terrible clash takes place between Frieza's new army and the Z Team fighters until Tagoma is knocked out by an attack from Gotenks. ⚡
The latter lying on the ground, Ginyu approaches him and begins to draw alien characters in the earth. It appears to be a language that only Frieza's forces can understand. He thus writes the word “ Change ” and makes Tagoma read it. The two warriors change bodies and Ginyu tells Frieza about his adventures. He explains to him that he has always remained faithful to him and then performs his famous combat pose in front of him to commemorate his rebirth. The Galactic Emperor is satisfied to have his best soldier back and Ginyu, proud to return to service, once again becomes Frieza's right-hand man while attacking the Z Team fighters. 👊
Ginyu is overpowered in his new body and takes down most of his opponents quite easily.
Remembering the clash against the Special Forces on Namek, Gohan challenges Ginyu to a single combat but is not up to the task due to his lack of training. Son Gohan then transforms into a Super Saiyan and manages to defeat Ginyu in two blows. However, he decides to spare him, claiming that it is useless to continue the fight. Frieza attacks Gohan while Ginyu, despite his injuries, decides to hold back the other Z Team fighters. 🤼♀️
When Goku and Vegeta arrive on the battlefield, Ginyu then declares his contempt towards them for trapping him in Ginyu's body. The Saiyan prince then instantly kills Ginyu with a simple ki blast , not wanting the latter to interfere during the fight against Frieza. This death puts an end to the Ginyu Commando once and for all.
DRAGON BALL GT AND BROLY MOVIE
Ginyu appears in the Super C17 saga . He manages to escape from Hell with other villains including the rest of the Special Forces. However, he will be quickly defeated and locked in a cell again.
In the Broly film he is present with the rest of the Ginyu Commando alongside Frieza and King Cold on planet Vegeta. They act as escorts when the submission of the Saiyan people is demanded by the Galactic Emperor from King Vegeta . 🔥
POWER OF GINYU
During the Namek saga, Frieza, speaking of Goku, is surprised that someone in the universe managed to surpass Ginyu. Jeice tells us that Captain Ginyu's maximum power can be up to 120,000 units.
In comparison, except for Guldo, the power of other Special Forces members is between 30 and 60 thousand power units. In terms of speed, Barta remains faster than Ginyu but much less powerful. 💥
After swapping bodies with Son Goku, however, his power dropped to 23,000 because Ginyu is unable to control the Saiyan's power. This allows Krillin to have a power equivalent to that of the Special Forces captain . However, in the anime only, Ginyu gradually ends up controlling Goku's body as the fight progresses and thus manages to push back Krillin and Gohan simultaneously . However, he is far from matching Vegeta after the latter received a power boost. 💪
His power obviously dropped to zero after being transformed into a Namekian Frog. Some time later, Ginyu takes over Bulma 's body and despite the latter's lack of skill, the captain still manages to perform the air dance with this new body. This only allows Ginyu to fly but makes him unable to beat Krillin. He then attempts to take Piccolo's body but he finally returns to his frog form thanks to Gohan's intervention.
In the Golden Frieza Saga, Son Gohan claims that the power of Ginyu in Tagoma's body is much higher than the power of Tagoma himself. The latter having undergone the same training as him, this allowed Ginyu to fully master the potential of his new body . He is thus capable of decimating the members of the Z Team and is even superior to Gohan in his base form. Despite this energy boost , it is however impossible for him to defeat his opponent in Super Saiyan form . 💥
However, even after being defeated, Ginyu still has the ability to quickly recover from his injuries and is able to return to battle again in an attempt to help Frieza. However, he will be effortlessly defeated by Vegeta using a point-blank energy shot.
GINYU’S FAVORITE ATTACKS
Power Up : Ginyu has the rare ability to increase his power and hide his real power. He is one of the few warriors in Frieza's army to know this technique. It is thanks to her that Ginyu understood on Namek that Goku was hiding his true potential. He can also use this technique even when he has swapped bodies with another fighter.
Body Switching : Ginyu's secret skill is to switch bodies with his opponent. He can do it at will but he will always keep his original voice. However, Ginyu only uses this technique as a last resort, in order to gain an advantage over an opponent more powerful than him.
Super Surging Wave : Ginyu extends his palm forward and fires a ball of purple energy towards his opponent.
Galactic dynamite : a barrage of purple energy shots aimed at the opponent
Self-Mutilation : The user intentionally inflicts a near-fatal attack on themselves in an attempt to weaken themselves. This technique is usually used before body swapping.
ANECDOTES
Like other members of the Special Forces, his name is a play on words for a dairy product. For Ginyu it is gyūnyū (牛乳), the Japanese word for cow's milk . 🐄
Ginyu's power is approximately 80,000 units . However, he has the ability to greatly increase his power and is capable of going up to 120,000.
As Ginyu has the ability to change bodies at will, it is unknown what his true form is. Some sources claim that the humanoid appearance with horns and purple skin in the Namek Saga is its original form. Other sources, however, suggest that Ginyu would have joined this corps before joining Frieza's army. 👊
In the video game Budokai Tenkaichi 3 , a comment from Chichi tells us that Ginyu seems to love superhero poses in comics. He would then have applied his own combat poses within the Special Forces.
After using the body change technique , Ginyu cannot always take advantage of the full potential of his new body. Indeed, Goku's power level on Namek was 180,000 units but Ginyu could not exceed 23,000 with the Saiyan body. The mutant was unable to take advantage of Goku's full power because he did not have knowledge of the Kaioken technique . He could not increase his power. 💪
In the film dealing with the return of Frieza, Ginyu was however able to take advantage of the full potential of Tagoma 's body because the latter had trained with Frieza and thus knew all his attacks.
